Water Storage of Three Gorges Dam will not Affect Chinese Sturgeon's Reproduction
According to the long-term monitoring results published by China Three Gorges Corporation, Chinese sturgeon (it is under state first-class protection and was praised as "Panda in Water") could reproduce naturally during the 175 meters experimental water storage of Three Gorges Reservoir.
It is reported that this monitoring item was leaded by Institute of Chinese Sturgeon and launched in 2009. The item focused on the monitoring of the natural reproduction of Chinese sturgeon at lower reaches of Gezhou Dam during the 175 meters experimental water storage of Three Gorges Reservoir. It also put great emphasis on the research of the influence on Chinese sturgeon's reproduction caused by the change of dynamical factors.
After two years monitoring, Institute of Chinese Sturgeon completed the research of water quality of the lower reaches of Gezhou Dam, reproduction colony and scale of Chinese sturgeon. The collected monitoring data of the natural reproduction of Chinese sturgeon in lower reaches of Gezhou Dam between 2009 and 2010 indicates that Chinese sturgeon could reproduce naturally during the 175 meters experimental water storage of Three Gorges Reservoir.
Chinese sturgeon has been living on the Earth for about 0.14 billion years. It could live in the sea and spawn in Yangtze River. After the construction of Gezhou Dam, new spawning field of Chinese sturgeon has been formed in lower reaches of Gezhou Dam.
