Three Gorges Reservoir Area Increased over 1 Million mu Afforested Area

In order to protect the scene in Three Gorges Reservoir area that "green mountains on the both banks and a limpid river in the middle", Chongqing increased the afforested area in Three Gorges Reservoir area in 2011, and completed 1060,000 mu afforested area in the whole year. Now, many barren lands in Three Gorges area have been dressed up. There formed three-dimensional forest landscape belt. The barren lands which exposed have been covered by plants, and you can see green everywhere on the two banks.

In history, Three Gorges Reservoir area was a forest covered area. As for the natural climate and man-made damage, the forest area was largely decreased, and water loss and soil erosion became worse. Presently, Three Gorges Reservoir area is still one of the most vulnerable areas for its ecological environment.

In recent years, Chongqing drawn up and carried out the total program about the both banks forest project in Three Gorges Reservoir area. This giant project regarded ecological protection forest on the both banks, ecological protection forest on the mountain waist, ecological migration and other three items as the main body, planed to realize green coverage on the mountain waist first level in Yangtze River main stream and anabranch areas by building new forest, repairing old plant and altering low quality and poor efficiency forest.

The related superintendent of Chongqing Forestry Bureau introduced that in 2011, Chongqing increased the investment for building forest to ensure the Yangtze River forestation project can be carried out smoothly. They financed 985 millions RMB for the 15 migration counties in the whole year. Chongqing Forestry Bureau also planed to pay 150 millions to the "Yangtze River forestation" trial units in autumn.

Until now, Chongqing has completed 1.06 millions mu afforested area in Three Gorges Reservoir area, including 840,000 mu new built forest and 220,000 altered poor efficiency forest.
