The Effect of Three Gorges Project on Scenic Spots

Yangtze River Three Gorges is important scenic spot of China. It starts from the White Emperor City in Fengjie, Chongqing to the Nanjin Pass in Yichang, Hubei Province, stretching about 200 kilometers. It is consisted of Qutang Gorge, Wu Gorge and Xiling Gorge. In the Three Gorges, the terrain is very steep, mountains are green and water is limpid. There are many historical relics in the Three Gorges area. As for the Three Gorges Project, the terrain of Three Gorges makes people feel less steep. Some sight spots in Three Gorges which was hard to go become more convenience to visit.

The Effect of Three Gorges Project on Scenic Spots – White Crane Ridge

The White Crane Ridge inscription is a natural stone ridge, located on the surface of the Yangtze River in Fuling area. It is 1600 meters long, with 165 inscriptions and 18 fishes. It reveals the low-flow data of this area in 17 years from Tang Dynasty to Qing Dynasty. It is the earliest, with longest range and largest amount hydrological inscriptions in the world. After the water impounding completed in Three Gorges reservoir, the White Crane Ridge will be submerged. The cultural heritage department built giant underwater transparent container without pressure around it to protect it. And it became the first underwater museum in the world.

The Effect of Three Gorges Project on Scenic Spots – Zhang Fei Temple

The Zhang Fei Temple is located on the opposite bank of Yunyang County. It was built to commemorate the famous general in Three Kingdoms Period – Zhang Fei. There are many ancient buildings, tablets and inscriptions. Between 2002 and 2003, the cultural heritage department wholly removed the Zhang Fei Temple to its represent site, 32 kilometers to its original site on the eastern side.

The Effect of Three Gorges Project on Scenic Spots – Shibaozhai

Shibaozhai is located at the opposite bank of Yunyang County, Chongqing. It is 25 meters high tower, the only column and tie construction tall wooden construction in China. It is praised as one of the eight architecture gems in the world. On the back of the tower, there is a mountain towering up, and the sides of the mountain are as steep as jade, hence named "Jade Seal Mountain". The mountain and the tower are a whole. As the altitude of the mountain is high, so the Shibaozhai became a lonely island after water impounding in Three Gorges Reservoir. At the same time, the rising water will make the mountain stone become softer and disintegrate, so the cultural heritage department built a giant dike around the Shibaozhai.

Furthermore, the local government also wholly removed the Dachang Ancient Town and Qu Yuan Temple, and made the White Emperor City become an island in the river. Some historical relics which can't be moved were submerged in the river forever.
