Three Gorges Project is also named Three Gorges Hydropower Station, Three Gorges Dam. It is located on the main branch of the Yangtze River from Chongqing to Yichang. The Three Gorges Dam is located in Sandouping, near to Yichang Municipality, and form step power plant with Gezhouba Hydropower Station in the down stream. It is the largest water conservancy project in the world, also the largest scale project in China. It has attracted world wide attention since the idea was put forward as for the problems caused by it. The function of Three Gorges Project includes navigation, power generation, planting and so on.

In April 3rd, 1992, the idea of Three Gorges Project was passed in the Fifth Plenary Session of the Seventh National People's Congress. In 1994, the Three Gorges Project started to be built. In 2003, the Three Gorges Reservoir began to conserve water and generate electricity. In 2009, the whole project was completed.

The Three Gorges Dam is 185 meters high; the water conservancy level is 175 meters; and the reservoir is over 600 kilometers long. The Three Gorges Reservoir is installed 32 machines with 700,000 KW capacity. It is the largest hydropower station in the world.

In July, 2010, the Three Gorges project reached the trial task (generating capacity is 430 million degree everyday, which is 5 percent of the whole generating capacity one day of China). In 1949, the whole generating capacity of China is 4300 million degree.

The preliminary plan of Three Gorges Hydropower Station is 26 machines with 700,000 KW capacity, so the installed capacity is 182000,000 KW, and annual generating capacity is 84700 million degree. Later, there built underground power plant on the right bank, installed six 700,000 KW hydraulic generators. Adding the two 50,000KW power station of the Three Gorges Hydropower Station, the total installed capacity reached 22500,000 KWH. The annual generating capacity is 100,000 million degree, which is five times of Gezhouba Hydropower Station, and 10 times of Dayawan Nuclear Plant. It is about 3 percent of the national total one year generating capacity and 20 percent of national hydropower.
