Wuhan East Lake Scenic Area – Brief Introduction

Wuhan East Lake Scenic Area lies in the east suburb of Wuchang, whose name comes from its position. It has been listed as a national-level scenic spot. It is made up of five lakes - Guozheng Lake, Shuiguo Lake (Fruit Lake), Yujia Lake, Tang Lake and Niuchao Lake. It is a natural lake with superior natural environment. There are 18 species and 67 kinds of fishes live in its 3200-hectar water area, among which Wuchang fish is the most famous and precious one. Wuchang fish is one of the bream fish and is the local product of the Liangzi Lake in Wuchang. More than 2.5 kilograms of fish were cultivated in East Lake every year.

Wuhan East Lake Scenic Area – Scenic Spots

The main scenic spots of Wuhan East Lake Scenic Area are Fable Garden, Music Fountain, Xingyin Pavilion, Changtian Tower, Jiunu Mound (Nine Women Soldiers Tomb), Huguang Pavilion and Mo Mountain.

Wuhan East Lake Scenic Area – Fable Garden

Fable Garden is the first sculpture garden based on the subject of ancient fables. It lies in the south of Tingtao Spot of East Lake. It covers an area of 4.4 hectares. 11 groups of fable scriptures have been finished, such as Fox Relying on Tiger's Power to Bully Others (in Chinese means bully or frighten others by flaunting other's power),the Foolish Old Man Removes the Mountain (which symbolizes the courage and determination of win a victory and overcome all the difficulties), Self-contradiction (in Chinese means one is not consistent in his speaking and action).

Wuhan East Lake Scenic Area – Xingyin Pavilion

Xingyin Pavilion is located on a small island on East Lake. It was built in 1955. It is surrounded by water and connected with the land by Hefeng Bridge and Luoyu Bridge. It got its name since there is a record in Chu Ci (Songs of Chu) said that Qu Yuan walked and recited poetries on the bank of the lake after he was exiled. The pavilion is structured by reinforced concrete. It is 22.5 meters high and shown in square level. Xingyin Pavilion is of rich national feature and is characterized by magnificence and beauty. A 3.6-meter high statue of Qu Yuan stands in front of the pavilion.

Wuhan East Lake Scenic Area – Changtian Tower

Changtian Tower is a palace-style architecture with local folk features which was built in 1956. It has green tiles and overhanging caves. It could receive 1000 people dining and drinking at the same time. Visitors could appreciate the beautiful lake landscape through the window and experience the feeling of "the river in autumn shares a scenic hue with the vast sky, the evening glow flies with a lonely duck".

Wuhan East Lake Scenic Area – Jiunu Mound

Jiunu Mound (Nine Women Soldiers Tomb) is located on a hill in the northwest of East Lake. It is said that a lot of women joined the army when Taiping Heavenly Kingdoms (a time in history 1851-1864) occupied Wuchang. Later, the army of Qing Government attacked the city and did a massacre violently. There were nine women soldiers sacrificed in the massacre. People here admired their courage and buried them together. It was called Jiunu Mound to avoid the persecution of army of Qing Government. In 1956, the government of Hubei Province listed it as a provincial cultural relic protection unit.

Wuhan East Lake Scenic Area – Huguang Pavilion

Huguang Pavilion was built on a small island in the middle of East Lake. It was connected with the land by the ten-mile dike. It was built for the fiftieth birthday of Jiang Jieshi (the main leader of party, government and army when Nationalist Party held the rein of government). It is a three-storey building with overhanging eaves and green tiles. Visitors could enjoy a peaceful lake landscape here. The lake and the sky share the same color on a foggy day; visitors would have a feeling of in an amazing fairyland.

Wuhan East Lake Scenic Area – Mo Mountain

Mo Mountain is located in the east of East Lake and faces water on three sides. Chu Cultural Zone which is characterized by rich Chu culture connotation is in the north of Mo Mountain while the 13 botanical gardens noted by various aquatic vegetations are in the south of Mo Mountain. Zhubei Pavilion was located at the west of Mo Mountain. It was built to memorize Zhu De (a famous marshal in China).
