Wuhan Botanical Garden of Chinese Academy of Science was built in 1956. Based on Central China has the characters of the floristics in the Climate Transitional Zone between North and South, it has made great contribution to the biology research, the protection and development of plant resource, environment construction, the sustainable development of national economy and society in the aspect of plant taxonomy, geo-botany, plant ecology, plant genetics these years. It has become a characteristic botany research institute in the field of regional plant resource research and a botany research institute enjoys a high reputation in the world.

Wuhan Botanical Garden – Excellent Subject Areas

Wuhan Botanical Garden has 150 staffs, among which there are 114 technical personnels (they hold doctor's degree of botany and have the right to grant a master's degree of ecology). It has the following excellent subject areas: Botany Conservation Genetics and Sustainable Utilization of the Genetic Resources, Phytobiology and Recovery of Aquatic Plants, Agro-forestry Ecology and Regional Ecology Environment Renovation, Research Base of Botanical Garden State Strategic Resource Reserve and Ex Situ Conservation of Plants.

Wuhan Botanical Garden – Social Roles

As one of the State Strategic Resource Reserve bases for plant resources, Wuhan Botanical Garden covers an area of 70 hectares. It has the biggest genetic resources center of kiwi fruit in the world and the biggest planting area of aquatic plants in East Asia. It has built two affiliated gardens for Ex Situ Conservation of Plants: Three Gorges Botanical Garden and Ex Situ Conservation Base of Rare Plants of Central China.

Wuhan Botanical Garden has introduced and cultivated more than 7000 of plants. It is a conservation base with most abundant species diversity and genetic resources in Central China. It is a State Public Educational Base and the National Scientific and Educational Base for Youth. It is the base of Public Education, Environmental Education and Patriotic Education of Wuhan City in Hubei province. It is also a state AAAA-class scenic spot.
