Tributaries of Yangtze River – Brief Introduction
Yangtze River has 49 tributaries which covers a river basin of more than 10000 square kilometers. Jialing River, Han River, Min River, Yalong River, Xiang River, Yuan River, Wu River, Gan River, Zi River and Tuo River are the main tributaries of Yangtze River. The following tributaries stretch more than 1000 kilometers: Han River, Jialing River, Yalong River, Yuan River and Wu River. The following tributaries cover an river basin of more than 50000 square kilometers: Jialing River, Han River, Min River, Yalong River, Xiang River, Yuan River, Wu River and Gan River.
Tributaries of Yangtze River – Xiang River
Xiang River also named Xiang Water. It is one of the main tributaries of Yangtze River and the largest river in Hunan Province. It stretches 856 kilometers and covers and river basin of 94600 square kilometers.
Tributaries of Yangtze River – Zi River
Zi River is one of the main tributaries of Yangtze River and one of the Four Rivers of Hunan Province. It has two sources – the South Source and the West Source.
The South Source is Dayi Water which originates from Ziyuan County of Guaxngxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and flows through Ziyuan County of Guangxi County, Xinning County and Shaoyang County of Hunan Province. The West Source is He Water which originates from Chengbu Miao Autonomous County and flows through Wugang County and Longhui County.
The South Source and the West Source meet at Shuangjiangkou of Shaoyang County and was named Zi River. It pours into Dongting Lake at Ganxigang in Yiyang City. Its main stream stretches 653 kilometers and covers a river basin of 282142 square kilometers.
Tributaries of Yangtze River – Han River
Han River is the longest tributary of Yangtze River. It originates from the southwestern of Shaanxi Province. It flows through southwest Shaanxi Province and Danjiang Reservoir. It flows into Yangtze River at Wuhan City. It stretches 1532 kilometers and covers a river basin of 151000 square kilometers. It has many branches, such as Bao River, Dan River, Tang River and Du River. There is an old saying goes that Han River is the most circuitous river in China.
Tributaries of Yangtze River – Yalong River
Yalong River is the largest tributary of Yangtze River. It originates from the south foot of Bayan Har Mountain in Qinghai Province. It stretches from the northwest to southeast and flows into Yangtze River at Panzhihua in Sichuan Province. The main stream is 1571 kilometers and has a total height difference of 4420 meters. Yalong River covers a river basin of 128444 square kilometers.
Tributaries of Yangtze River – Jialing River
Jialing River was called Yu Water in ancient times. It covers the largest river basin among all the tributaries of Yangtze River. It got its name since it flows through Jialing Valley in Shaanxi Province. It covers a river basin of 160000 square kilometers. It flows into Yangtze River at Chaotianmen of Chongqing.

Gan River is a tributary of Yangtze River and also the largest river in Jiangxi Province. Its annual flow is larger than Yellow River. It Pours into Poyang Lake with four branches. It stretches 991 kilometers and the main stream is 751 kilometers long. Gan River covers a river basin of 83500 square kilometers.
Tributaries of Yangtze River – Min River
Min River originates from Min Mountain. It stretches 735 kilometers and covers a river basin of 140000 square kilometers. It has a total height difference of 3560 meters. Min River is the largest tributary in the upper reaches of Yangtze River. Min River network, Tuo River network and some other artificial rivers formed Dujiangyan Irrigation Area.
Tributaries of Yangtze River – Tuo River
Tuo River also named Zhong River. There are three sources (originate from Jiuding Mountain) in the upper reaches of Tuo River: Mianyuan River, Shiting River and Jian River. It covers a river bason of 30000 square kilometers. It mainly flows through the basin and hilly area. Sanxingdui Relic, Zizhong Ancient Town and Zigong Dinosaur Relic are on the banks of Tuo River.
