Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge is the first double-deck bridge with railway and expressway completely designed and constructed by Chinese.
Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge - Structure
The upper deck expressway bridge is 4589 meters long and the driveway is 15 meters wide with more than 2 meters wide side pavement on both sides. The lower deck railway bridge is 6772 meters long and 14 meters wide. The bridge across Yangtze River is 1577 meters long and the left is approach bridge attach to the main bridge.
Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge was started to build on January 18, 1960. Its lower deck railway bridge was put into operation formally in September 1968 and the upper expressway bridge was put into operation in December 1968. Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge is the biggest bridge across Yangtze River follows the construction of Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge and Chongqing Baishatuo Yangtze River Bridge. Tianjin – Pukou of Nanjing Railway and Shanghai – Nanjing Railway were put into operation after the construction of Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge.
Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge – Bridgeheads
There is a pair of bridgeheads on both ends of Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge. They are 70 meters high. There are five characters – the representatives of workers, peasants, soldiers, students and businessmen. They stride forward with a Five-star Red Flag in their hand. They are presenting a hard-working spirit. There are 150 pairs of magnolia flower-shape lights stand on both sides of the bridge. When the night screen has hung down, the bridge looks really beautiful and charming since the shinning lights make the profile of the bridge more clear. The night view of Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge was listed as one of the top 40 landscapes of Nanjing.
