Origin of Mitou Buddhist Temple

Mitou Buddhist Temple was originally located in east of Wanzhou County, standing on the side of Yangtze River. It was built during Qian Long Period of Qing Dynasty and renovated in 1890. It is said night gatekeeper Zhong Fei once jumped down the temple, so it was named Mituo Buddhist Temple and Bell Drum Tower. In the flourish time, there were more than 300 monks in the temple, they chanted sutra all day long, tolling bell in the morning, beating drum in the evening, what a blessed spot. Therefore, Mituo Buddhist Temple is not only a famous Buddist temple in southwest region but also renowned overseas. Due to the Three Gorges Dame construction, the temple is under the submerge line. Thus, from 1996 to 1998, Municipal People's government of Wanzhou County approved to remove Mituo Buddhist Temple to Lishan Mountain one of the "Eight Wonders of Wanzhou".

New Mitou Buddhist Temple

The new location of the temple has conveniently situation and beautiful scenery. When the Three Gorges Dam Construction finished, the temple would surrounded by water. The new temple covers an area of 16.2 acres composed by main hall, side hall, court of law, depositary of Buddhist sutra, praying tower, guest house and Services etc. When the new tower's construction work completed, it not only become a Buddhist resort but also a scenic area which including amusement, sightseeing and shopping. It is a new unique religious scenic area with large-scale, premium quality and complete functions.
