Jiuhua Mountain – Origin of its Name
Jiuhua Mountain's original name is Jiuzi Mountain; it is one of the Four Buddhist Mountains. Li Bai - a famous poet in Tang Dynasty wrote a poetry to describe the mountain as the following: this mountain is hundreds of meters high, and its nine peaks looks like a lotus. Then the mountain changed its name to Jiuhua Mountain.
Jiuhua Mountain – Historical Story and Development
In the first open years of Tang Dynasty, Jin Qiaojue - a close relative of the king of Silla (today's Republic of Korea) inhabited in Jiuhua Mountain till he dead when he was 99 years old. He buried himself in his practice for 75 years. He was admired as the personification of Bodhisattva Kitigarbhaon. Then Jiuhua Mountain was opened as a home of the Kitigarbhaon. During the heyday of Ming and Qing Dynasty, more than 360 temples were located there, and there was about four to five thousands of lamas and nuns. The temples in the mountain attracted a large number of pilgrims. Today, there are 94 ancient temples, more than ten thousands of Buddhist statues, more than 2000 cultural relics and about 700 lamas and nuns.
Jiuhua Mountain – First Mountain of South-eastern
Jiuhua Mountain is very magnificent and graceful. It is covered with luxuriant vegetation, waterfalls hanging on the cliffs, and streams flowing in the mountain. It has a mild and humid climate and four distinctive seasons. It is known as "First Mountain of South-eastern" since it collected the natural scenery, cultural landscape and Buddhism atmosphere together. It has been a famous and popular tourist resort since ancient times.
