Huangshan Mountain has a long history, it is said that Emperor Huang - the ancestor of Chinese nation became an immortal here. The county here was named Huizhou in ancient times. Talking about the history of Huangshan Mountain, we have to mention Huizhou.

Huizhou is in the south of Anhui province, and its most part is in today's Huangshan City.

Historical Development of Huizhou

As early as in the Neolithic Age, there was the trace of human activity. In Western Zhou Dynasty, there was brilliant bronze culture. In Shang Dynasty, there was a group of ancient people named Shanyue lived here about 3,000 or 4,000 years ago. The Shanyue people's life was absolutely isolated with the world. They just hunting in the mountains and cultivating in the fields. During the Spring and Autumn Period, Huangshan belonged to Wu, Yue and Chu successively in the war years. After the First Emperor of Qin Dynasty unified the six countries, he established the system of prefectures and counties and Huangshan was belong to Kuaiji County.

During the Three Kingdoms period, Xindu County was established. There were a lot of wars in the northern area, a lot of people moved to Huizhou, including some well-known aristocratic families. Their arrival did a strong impact to the original life of the Shanyue people.

In the Western Jin Dynasty, Xindu County changed its name to Xinan County. The government office of the county was located in the Xinan River area. Xinan County changed its name to Xizhou during the Sui and Tang Dynasties to the Northern Song Dynasty.

In 1121, Xizhou changed its name to Huizhou during the Xuanhe Years of Emperor Hui in Song Dynasty. There are two sayings about the origin of Huizhou. One said that Hui means beauty and kindness, which indicated his happiness after he regained Huizhou. The other saying said that there were Hui River and Hui Mountain in the area, so it was called Huizhou.

In the Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties, Huizhou stayed in a relatively stable state. In 1667, during the Emperor Kangxi Years of Qing Dynasty, Anhui was established as a province. Its name was originated from the names of Anqing and Huizhou.

The State Council approved to change the Huizhou Area to Huangshan City in November 1987. Huangshan City was formally set up in July 1988. The following three districts and four counties are under the jurisdiction of Hushan City: Tunxi District, Huangshan District, Huizhou District, Xixian County, Baoning County, Yixian County, and Qimen County.
