Brief Introduction of Goddess Peak

Shennu Peak (Goddess Peak), also named Wangxia Peak (Looking Sunglow Peak) or Beauty Peak, is one of the twelve peaks in Wu Gorge. It located on the north bank of Yangtze River in Wu Gorge, 15 kilometers away from the Wushan County. Goddess Peak gets its name for it is a giant rock towering among the green mountains and sunglow, just like a graceful and beautiful girl.

The cloud and mist around the peak, just like voile covered on the figure shape stelae, making the stelae become more amorous and charming. As it is the first one to welcome the gorgeous alpenglow and the last one to bid farewell to the afterglow, so it is also named Wangxia Peak.

Legend of Goddess Peak

In ancient time, the 23rd daughter of Heavenly Queen Mother whose name is Yao Ji lived in the heavenly palace. She learned infinite theurgies from the God of Three Primes and titled as Lady Yunhua who in charge of boy and girl servants in fairyland.

Yao Ji is an active girl, so she can't endure the lonely life in heavenly palace. One day, she left the palace with her servant travel to west. But when she saw the storm and monster wave of the sea harmed human beings, she left west for east. On her way, she past thousands mountains and enjoyed the wonderful scenery of human world. When she arrived at the Wu Mountain, she saw 12 dragons were making troubles to the human. She was so angry that decided to kill the dragons for the human. So, she pressed the cloud and pointed to the dragons. Thunders began to roar and the mountains shake. When everything came back to peace, the body of 12 dragons have became 12 mountains blocked the Wu Gorge, head off the Yangtze River. The surging river emerged fields and cities. Today's Sichuan Province became boundless ocean.

In order to harness the flood, Yu came to Yangtze River. As the mountains very high and water flowed very quickly, it is not easy to open up the mountain and lead water. Yu was very anxious about the flood. At that time, Yao Ji was moved by Yu and she call six followers came to help Yu channelize Three Gorges and lead flood to East Sea.

After Yu known he was helped by the Goddess, he came to Wu Mountain to thank her. He reached the top, just saw a graceful bluestone. When he was wondering, beautiful Yao Ji appeared. Yao Ji gave Yu a scroll which is useful for harnessing flood. Although flood has under control, Yao Ji didn't leave. She stood on the top of Wu Mountain to lead the ships, repeal wild beasts, command clouds and rain and plant ganoderma to treat diseases. Year by Year, Yao Ji forgets to back to heavenly palace, she even forgets herself. At last, she became the yearning Goddess peak and her followers also became the mountains to guard Goddess.

The legend of Goddess Peak is very popular in Wu Mountain area. In ancient, local people built the Goddess temple on the piedmont of Feifeng (Fly Phoenix) Mountain to commemorate Yao Ji. There is a platform on the mountainside where is the place Yao Ji gave the scroll to Yu.
