In the Tang dynasty, Bai Juyi and his brother Bai Xingjian travelled to Three Gorges and they came across the poet Yuan Zhen. So the three poets invited each other to visit the cave together. For this cave is very beautiful and a few people came, they decided to indite poem about the cave.

At last, Bai Juyi wrote the Three Visitors Cave Preface on the precipice: "we are the first three people came here, named it Three Visitor Cave". As there were some other people came later, so it was called "First Three Visitors".

In the winter of 1059, the poet in Song dynasty Su Xun and his two sons Su Shi and Su Zhe left Sichuan for Beijing. When they past by Yi Ling, they visited the cave and each of they made a poem on the cliff. It was named "later Three Visitors "

Because Three Visitors Cave located on the important road which leads to Sichuan Province, most celebrities in the history came to visit, and left some poems on the cliff. Until now, there are still about 60 inscriptions in the cave.

It is said that the great poet in Southern Song Lu You travelled here and felt very thirsty, and suddenly there gushed out a little tricklet. When he held up the water by his hand and drank it, he felt refreshed and the sweet diffused soma. So he made a poem here. In order to commemorate this great poet, people named this spring as "Lu You Spring". People who visit the cave will come to see the spring.
