Brief Introduction of Wanzhou District

Wanzhou District of Chongqing covers an aera of 3457square kilometers, contains 52 towns and subdistricts. It is the most populous district among the 40 districts and counties of Chongqing, its total population approaches 1.717 million. Its city size is also the largest except the central city of Chongqing. Its quantity of migrants approaches 0.263 million, and takes one fifth of the migrants of Three Gorges Reservoir Region and takes one fourth of the migrants of Chongqing Section of Three Gorges Reservoir Region. Wanzhou District shoulders the most of the of the resettlement work of the Three Gorges Dam.

Geography of Wanzhou District

Wanzhou District belonging to Chongqing, is the centre of Three Gorges Reservoir Region and located in east Sichuan Basin and the joint of the Middle and Upper Reaches of Yangtze River. Wanzhou is named after rivers meeting here and traders gathering here, it is also one of the ten biggest ports on the Yangtze River. It is 327 kilometers apart from the Chongqing urban district (in the upper reaches) and 321 kilometers apart from Yichang city of Hubei province (in the lower reaches) by waterway. It is a hub of the land and water communications of the eastern part of Sichuan. It crosses the Daba Mountain, Wushan Mountain, Qiyao Mountain and the Sichuan parallel ridge-and-valley area. It is the centre of Three Gorges Reservoir Region, the world-famous Three Gorges and Lesser Three Gorges are here, too. There are chains of undulating and crossing hills here. Since the streets and buildings backs on to the hills and commands the river it is also called the “city of river”.

Development of Wanzhou District

In 1902, Treaty of Commerce between China and British opened Wanzhou as a port. In 1915, British and Japan established Customs here. In 1928, Wanzhou was established to be a city. The mountains and hills here are rich in coal, iron, sulphur and salt. Wanzhou is prolific in the production of tangerines, tung oil, sapium sebiferum, Chinese lacquer, and mushrooms. It is also one of the main localities of goats and goats skins. The industry here is headed by food industry (tinned meat) and the industry of textile and leather, and the followed is the industry of paper, engineering and chemical fertilizers.

The throughout capacity per year of Wanzhou port rank the second Chongqing wide and that just behind the Chongqing port. The transportation in Wanzhou is well developed by water and land. There are a lot of arterial highways here, including Wanzhou-Lichuan (Hubei province) highway, Wanzhou-Kaixian highway, and Wanzhou-Zhongxian highway. It is an important collecting and distributing center of goods and materials of the following sections: the east part of Sichuan province, the west part of Hunan and Hubei province, and the south part of Shaanxi province. Tracing up along the river, you can find the charming Shibaozhai in Zhongxian County. Tracing down along the river, you can find the famous Zhangfei Temple in Yunyang County, the Baidi Town in Fengjie County, and the Lesser Three Gorges of the Daning River and the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River.
