Nanjing Confucius Temple - Brief Introduction

Nanjing Confucius Temple was built in Song Dynasty. It is located at the northern bank of Qinhuai River and next to Gongyuan Street.

Nanjing Confucius Temple was built to worship and memorize Confucius – a great thinker and educationist of Spring and Autumn Warring States. It is a famous and attractive scenic spot both at home and abroad. Confucius Temple Area had been a prosperous area since Eastern Wu Dynasty. There were a lot of rich families lived in Wuyi Alley, Zhuque Street and Taoyedu areas. Confucius Temple acted as the examination place of imperial examination held by Guozijian (the highest educational institution in that time). A lot of candidates collected here and promoted the development of the service industry here. There are various kinds of teahouses and snacks.

Nanjing Confucius Temple - Architectures

The architectures of Nanjing Confucius Temple are characterized by features of Ming and Qing dynasties. It centers on Dacheng Palace. The north-south central axis is formed of Screen Wall, Defense Mountain and Dacheng Palace. The buildings standing on the two sides are bilateral symmetry. Confucius Temple covers an area of 26300 square meters. Its large-scaled architectures which reflect a traditional Chinese style experienced many ups and downs in history. It was rebuilt in the eighth year of Tongzhi Period of Qing Dynasty. It was listed as a key cultural unit under the protection of Nanjing City after liberation.

Nanjing Confucius Temple – History of Snack Food

Nanjing Confucius Temple Area is the birthplace of Nanjing snacks. It had been the center of snack food early in six dynasties (Eastern Wu Dynasty, Eastern Jin Dynasty, Song Dynasty, Qi Dynasty, Liang Dynasty and Chen Dynasty. All of them established Nanjing as their capital.). Confucius Temple Area became more prosperous in Ming and Qing dynasties with the sprung up of light boats. There were more than 20 snack food stores in this area at that time.

The snack food of Nanjing Confucius Temple Area is thriving since 80s since as never before. The old and famous snack food stores are widely spread. There is a Snack Food Month each year since December 1987 and it holds two food festivals each year later. The local flavor snacks here are very popular among visitors.
