Hubei Provincial Museum

Hubei Provincial Museum is a comprehensive museum which merges relic collection, reservation, protection, exhibition and research. It is located on the coast of Estern Lake. It covers an area of 81909 square meters, in which the construction area takes 49611 square meters and the exhibition hall takes 13427 square meters. It collects more than 0.2 million relics, among which there are about 1000 first-class relics.

Hubei Provincial Museum – Brief Introduction

Hubei Provincial Museum is the most important institution of cultural relic collection and research. It is an AAAA-class scenic spot approved by State Bureau of Tourism. It was developed from Hubei Provincial Science Museum. It was moved to the coast of Eastern Lake of Wuchang City. It changed its name to Hubei Provincial Museum officially in January 1963 and opened its exhibition building which covers an area of 3000 square meters to public. Its Chimes Museum which covers an area of 5717 square meters was completed and opened to public in January 1999. Chu Culture Museum was completed and opened to public in December 2005. The new Comprehensive Exhibition Museum was completed and opened to public in September 2007.

Hubei Provincial Museum – Exhibitions

There are more than ten series of exhibitions in Hubei Provincial Museum: Chu Culture, Human Beings of Yun County - Ancient Human Beings of Middle Reaches of Yangtze River, Qujialing - Protoculture of Middle Reaches of Yangtze River, Panlong City – Bronze Civilization of Middle Reaches of Yangtze River, Tomb of Zeng Houyi, Record of Jiuliandun (Nine Tombs of Chu), History of Warring States Period, Qin and Han Dynasties, Lacquer Art of Qin and Han Dynasties, Tomb of King Liangzhuang – Treasure of Zhenghe Times, Art of Soil and Fire – Special Exhibition of Ancient Porcelains, and Heroes of Jingzhou.

Its various and rich collections, excellent displays and layout, profound cultural atmosphere and comfortable appreciating environment are welcomed by visitors. People here could learn the long history and rich culture of Hubei Area. Hubei Provincial Museum receives more than 100,000 visitors annually. It has been an important base of patriotic education for young people. Jiang Zeming – a top leader of Communist Party and China made some highly complimentary remarks about the museum.

Hubei Provincial Museum – Most Valuable Treasures

Emperor Gou Jian's Sword: It is 55.7 centimeters long and was unearthed in 1965. It is the sword of Gou Jian (Emperor of Yun in late Spring and Autumn Warring States Period). It is not rusted after thousands of years.

Chime of Zeng Houyi: It was unearthed in 1978. The frame of the chime is 748 meters long and 265 meters high. It weights 4.5 tons. It was made up of 65 parts and divided into 3 floors. It could be dated back to Warring States Period.

The Skull Fossil of Human Being of Yun County: It could be dated back to Paleolithic Age. It was unearthed in 1989. The skull is 26 centimeters long, 19 centimeters wide and 12 centimeters high. It is the first skull fossil of ancient human being discovered in Hubei Province.

The Blue and White Four-love Picture Vase of Yuan Dynasty: It was unearthed in 2006. The shoulder of the vase was decorated with phoenix and peonies; its belly is decorated with Four-love Picture (orchid loved by Wang Xizhi, chrysanthemum loved by Tao Yuanming, lotus loved by Zhou Dunyi, and plum loved by Lin Hejing).
